Kobo Town Brings Nick "Brownman" Ali to Town at The Speakeasy
Toronto-based Kobo Town will be performing their unique blend of traditional calypso, roots reggae and West Indian folk music at The Speakeasy with special guest Nick "Brownman" Ali on Thursday, November 10th, 2005. One of Canada's most acclaimed jazz trumpet players, Brownman was recently voted Toronto's Best Jazz Artist of 2005 by the readers of NOW Magazine - the city's most comprehensive and respected print media for music information.
"... performing with Kobo Town I couldn't help but be struck with the sparse and languid vibrations, yet layered in vocal poignancy with Drew's lyrics embodying the best in the Trinidadian spirit of storytelling," noted Brownman after appearing with the band's September 14th show at Clinton's.
Named after the historic neighborhood in Trinidad's Port-of-Spain where calypso was born amid the boastful, humourous and militant chants of the roaming stickfighters, Kobo Town has been sharing this tradition of rhythmic and melodic cross-pollination with audiences around Ontario, including Kaiso Breakfast Lime (Scarborough), The Studio Theatre (Perth ), Clinton's Tavern (Toronto ), Mercury Lounge (Ottawa). Kobo Town will be headlining the University of Toronto "Hurricane Relief Concert" this December.
Kobo Town is an eight piece Toronto-based group formed in order to help revive interest in the art of traditional calypso (kaiso), and to demonstrate its contemporary relevance by engaging the crucial issues of our time. Kobo Town's music reflects today's Caribbean-Canadian diaspora, melding traditional Trinidadian music and new sounds encountered in Canada, including funk, jazz, Haitian kompa, Cuban descarga, and Congolese soukous. As a global capital of dub poetry, Toronto is the perfect setting for a band that owes a heavy debt to Canada's dub poets, particularly Clifton Joseph and Anthony Bansfield.

Trinidadian-born, NYC-schooled and multi award-winning trumpet player Nick "Brownman" Ali has been at the forefront of innovation in the Canadian jazz community for over a decade. He has close to 150 recording credits, many of these albums having won or been nominated for Junos. At the personal invitation of Chucho Valdes, he will be again be representing Canada at this year's Havana Jazz Festival; leading CRUZAO HAVANA with younger brother Marcus Ali on sax and an all-Cuban rhythm section comprised of members of Chucho Valdes' essential Afro-Cuban ensemble IRAKERE.

FLEEING NEW YORK
"Hollywood Bowl"
24th October - Stuck Up Music
In celebration of their performances at this years Reading Festival and their appearance on Channel 4's 'Road to V', Southampton three piece Fleeing New York re-release their stomping single 'Hollywood Bowl'. Backed with 'Eyeballs' and brand new track - the haunting; 'Here We Stand.'
Taken from their critically acclaimed e.p. A.O.K - 'Hollywood Bowl' is a shining example of FNY's punked up garage-pop. Already likened to QOTSA, through Joan Jett and The Delgados, they have made a name for themselves as an electrifying live band. It was the strength of their live performances that saw them make the final six - from a list of over 1000 UK bands - to play a televised showcase for this year's Channel 4 "Road to V" competition.
It's been a busy year for the band, Russell Marsden (vocals & Guitar), Emma Richardson (Vocals & Bass) and Matt Hayward (Drums). After hitting the road throughout the summer and blowing the roof off the Carling's Islington Bar Academy in front of a sell out crowd, FNY were invited as one of the best new bands in the country to play the VIP Tiscali tent at the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival.
But there's no let up for the rest of the year with a series of high profile gigs including supports for Eighties Matchbox B-line disaster (www.fleeingnewyork.com/nmelive.htm?contentid=9075) , The Rifles and Towers of London. In between they are taking the time to record their debut full length album with legendary Producer Chris Kimsey (Rolling Stones, Ash), details to follow shortly.

Genesis Plus Mike + the Mechanics: New Releases
Launch Media Player!
HISTORY OF PLATINUM SELLING BAND CAPTURED ON 'GENESIS PLATINUM COLLECTION': First hits collection spotlighting both the Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins Years 'GENESIS VIDEO SHOW': Complete video collection on DVD for the first time
Plus, Mike + the Mechanics 'Hits' and New Album 'Rewired' Out September 13th on Rhino Records
New York, NY- On September 13th, Rhino Records will release the 3 CD career-spanning 'Genesis Platinum Collection' and 'Genesis Video Show' as well as a new album and a hits collection from the side project Mike + The Mechanics.
'Genesis Platinum Collection' is the first and only retrospective to cover both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins eras. The four hours of music on three CDS is the most comprehensive collection to date featuring everything from earlier Gabriel-era favorites like "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" to Top 40 hits like "Hold On My Heart" and Billboard Top 10 chart smashes "Invisible Touch". "Follow You Follow Me" and "Counting Out Time" are a few of the 24 newly remixed tracks. Favorites "I Can't Dace", "Tonight Tonight Tonight" and "Turn It On Again" round out the set. A twenty page booklet with liner notes by Hugh Fielder accompany the discs.
Founded in the late '60s in Surrey, England, Genesis rose out of the ashes of earlier bands formed by schoolmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips (who departed after 1969's Trespass, the album providing the final track on this stellar retrospective). Guitarist Steve Hackett soon signed on, as did drummer/vocalist Phil Collins, who'd later emerge (as would Gabriel) as a solo superstar. Following Gabriel's 1975 departure, Genesis grew from a progressive art-rock outfit into one of the biggest arena rock acts ever, with a long string of platinum-sellers and chart smashes.
Additionally, all of the Genesis promo videos will be released for the first time on DVD with 'Genesis Video Show'. The digitally remastered videos include MTV staples "Land of Confusion", "Invisible Touch", and "I Can't Dance" as well as the 1999 version of "Carpet Crawlers" featuring Gabriel. Rare BBC footage of "Paperlate" is also included. Simultaneously, Genesis bassist/guitarist Rutherford reunites with Paul Carrack for the first Mike + The Mechanics album since 1999, 'Rewired'. 'Rewired' finds Mike + The Mechanics in top form with nine powerful new original songs including the driving electronic track "One Left Standing (Version A)," the sublime ballad "If I Were You," and the adventurous title track. Re-mastered versions of Top 10 singles "The Living Years", "Silent Running" and "All I Need Is A Miracle" are three of the 13 favorite tracks on another new disc 'Hits'.

With all the zillions of rock CDs available on the web, how do you know which ones are any good?
Want to find a great new artist, away from the main stream? Bewildered by the number of albums out there, and don't want to spend your hard earned money on a sub-standard recording or artist? Sure you say! So how are you going to sort through the mob of pretenders? Well here's a sure-fire way to tell that what you get is going to be great music, and worth every penny. Great reviews. And not just one, but heaps of them. The rock music of Tony Koretz is chalking up an ever increasing list of very positive, praising reviews, from different parts of the globe by a burgeoning number of reviewers. And the name of the noteworthy album is "Kicking Cans". Sure if you want rap, hip hop or even some limp wristed pop this CD, it probably won't be for you. But if you enjoy rock, actually more than that; good old fashioned rock with some meat to it, then this album should be part of your collection. If you don't believe me, then believe what the reviewers are saying. Here is a small taster: extracts from some of these reviews:

Dan Peter
Dan Peter is a singer songwriter from Airdrie, Alberta and has been lead guitar player for many Alberta based bands including "Decoy" "High Test"and "Alien Baby". Currently residing in southern Alberta, Peter has finished his first solo EP "Transistor", an eclectic blend of acoustic based music. "Transistor" has been described by music critics as intimate with vocals as deep as Jim Morrison's.
"The opening track, "lunar man" begins with a pseudo radio report of the roswell UFO incident that reminds us of Major Tom's close encounter... Peter's vocals have a breathy quality to them affected to sound slightly derranged and his performance in the lower baritone register reminds us of Crash Test Dummies. Solid indie release and we look forward to more."
--earBuzz
"his vocals are as deep as Jim Morrison's, even nearing Crash Test Dummies proportions with a bit of Leonard Cohen's sing-speak rumble poking through. A great display,"Transistor" is very encouraging as to Peter's future outings, which will hopefully include even more adventurous full-lenths."
--Jaclyn Arndt, Soul Shine Magazine
"We immediately popped it in the boom box here at STWHQ and turned up the decibels. Loved the start of (and the rest of) Lunar Man, how could we not! We must say though that everyone here seemed to find an affinity for the tune Higher ground as well.... sending our best for your music endevours, we will enjoy your music here for quite some time!"
